Tonometry Medical Test

Tonometry is a test to measure the pressure inside your eyes. The test might make you feel like blinking, but it does not cause any pain. There are no risks from this test. If glaucoma is detected early, it can usually be treated. However, it may go unrecognized for years, because there usually are no symptoms. This test is used to help detect glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that can cause blindness by damaging the nerve in the back of the eye. Damage to the optic nerve may be caused in part by fluid that fails to drain properly out of the eye. In ophthalmology, tonometry is the procedure eye care professionals perform to determine the intraocular pressure, the fluid pressure inside the eye. Most tonometers are calibrated to measure pressure in mmHg. Traditional tonometers that are used to measure intraocular pressure for the diagnosis of glaucoma are plagued with a multitude of problems, such as invasiveness and the need for sterilization.
