Electromyography Medical TestElectromyography is a test that assesses the health of the muscles and the nerves controlling the muscles. Electromyography is performed most often to help diagnose different diseases causing weakness. Although EMG is a test of the motor system, it may help identify abnormalities of nerves or spinal nerve roots that may be associated with pain or numbness. Electromyography is performed using an instrument called an electromyograph, to produce a record called an electromyogram. An electromyograph detects the electrical potential generated by muscle cells when these cells contract, and also when the cells are at rest. People usually have a small amount of discomfort during EMG testing because of pin insertion. Disposable needles are used so there is no risk of infection. Electromyograms are useful in determining whether there has been pressure on a nerve or nerve root degeneration. Electromyography can be used to differentiate between true weakness and reduced use due to pain or lack of motivation.
