Echocardiography Medical TestEchocardiography is a test that takes “moving pictures” of the heart with sound waves. It is done to help your doctor find out if you have problems with your heart or with how it's working. Echocardiography was the first medical application of ultrasound. Echocardiography was also the first application of intravenous contrast-enhanced ultrasound. This technique injects gas-filled microbubbles into the venous system to improve tissue and blood delineation. Echocardiography is usually performed by cardiologists or cardiac sonographers. This test may be used to monitor your progress if you already have a known heart condition. The ultrasound portion of this test is performed in the same way as an echocardiogram. Exercise or medication is used to increase your heart rate and show how your heart works under exertion. Echocardiography can also give doctors information about your arteries.
