Cholangiography Medical TestCholangiography is the testing of the bile duct by radiology. Cholangiography has largely replaced the previously used method of intravenous cholangiography. There are at least two kinds of cholangiography: Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography and Endoscopic retrograde choledochography. It is performed by an interventional radiologist using image guidance and involves placement of a needle and possibly a catheter directly through the skin and liver and into one of the bile ducts. It is often used to see if the bile ducts are blocked, such as in obstructive jaundice, where the bile is blocked from flowing into the duodenum and spills into the blood. Obstructive jaundice can be caused by gallstones blocking the bile ducts.
