Bone Densitometry Medical TestA bone densitometry also called Bone density scanning, is a special type of X-ray test used to measure the calcium content of the bone, usually in the lumbar region and the hips. Bone densitometry is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that often affects women after menopause but may also be found in men. Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, causing the bones to become thinner, more fragile and more likely to break. Men can also develop osteoporosis, but not as commonly as women. It is a safe, painless and noninvasive x-ray technique. The bone densitometer will measure your bone mineral density. It will also compare your measurements to a reference population based on your age, and sex. Your physician will use this information in making a diagnosis about your bone status and fracture risk.
