Blood Test Medical Test

Blood tests are laboratory tests done on blood to gain an appreciation of disease states and the function of organs. It is a procedure in which a sample of Blood is drawn and, under controlled conditions, analyzed in a laboratory for evidence of infection, disease or abnormality. Blood samples for testing can be taken either from a vein (which carries blood to the heart) or from an artery (which takes blood away from the heart). Most blood tests are taken from a vein, commonly from those around the elbow. First a cord (tourniquet) is tied around the upper arm to make the vein prominent. It may be a bit tight, but this makes it much easier to take the test. A blood test should be expected during your first prenatal exam. Additional blood testing may be requested to monitor potential complications, such as anemia or diagnosis of possible infections, such as toxoplasmosis. Blood tests can also be used to diagnose certain genetic diseases such as familial hypercholesterolemia, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anemia, thalassemia, and tay sachs disease.
