Blood Suger Test Medical TestBlood sugar testing is essential for all people with diabetes. A blood suger test measures the amount of a type of sugar, called glucose, in your blood. Glucose comes from carbohydrate foods. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body use and control the amount of glucose in your blood. Insulin is produced in the pancreas and released into the blood when the amount of glucose in the blood rises. A random blood sugar test measures your blood sugar at any point in time, not necessarily a certain amount of time after a meal, snack or beverage. Blood samples for testing can be taken either from a vein (which carries blood to the heart) or from an artery (which takes blood away from the heart). Blood glucose testing is usually recommended before meals and at bedtime. Daily blood glucose checks are especially important for people on insulin or the sulfonylureas class of antidiabetes drugs. This test may be used to diagnose or screen for diabetes and to monitor control in patients who have diabetes.
