Audiometry Medical TestAudiometry is a technique used to measure hearing. The benefits of these tests improve with repetition - in the first year the tests will identify the state of people's hearing including any noise induced hearing loss. Testing with audiometry equipment is simple and painless. The test is performed with the use of electronic equipment called an audiometer. This testing is usually administered by a trained technician called an audiologist. The equipment is used in health screening programs, for example in grade schools, to detect hearing problems in children. It is also used in the doctor's office or hospital audiology department to diagnose hearing problems in children, adults, and the elderly. No special precautions are required. Typically, audiometric tests determine a subject's hearing levels with the help of an audiometer, but may also measure ability to discriminate between different sound intensities, recognize pitch, or distinguish speech from background noise. Acoustic reflex and otoacoustic emissions may also be measured.
